Meet the DJs
We asked our DJs and volunteers to share a bit more of themselves;
what they love, what they play, and what keeps them showing up for
community radio. Think of this as a peek behind the mic so you can get
to know the real humans shaping the sound of KRFC.

- 2003
What’s the name of your show?
- NoCo Flow
When can listeners catch your show?

Who’s behind the mic?
- Music has always part of Andy’s life. Growing up in Ohio, Andy and his sister shared a radio and listened to the AM radio sounds of early 60’s, the 60’s evolution of music from folk to rock, Motown and acid rock. “The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show changed it for me at the age of 6. I wanted to be a musician!”

NoCo Flow & Locally Sourced
When did you start at KRFC?
- I started doing the NoCo Flow in November of 2022. Somewhere along the way I added Locally Sourced.

- NoCo Flow and Locally Sourced
When can listeners catch your show?
- Wednesdays 10am to 12pm for NoCo Flo and then 12-1pm for Locally Sourced.
Who’s behind the mic?
- I grew up in Colorado and then left for 25 years. Not long after moving back I joined KRFC as a volunteer DJ — which has been a dream of mine. Music has been a huge part of my life. I’ve explored all facets — performer, songwriter, manager, booking agent, record label owner, publicist, and distribution manager. Adding DJ to that list has been fantastic. And, especially in this town — such a fun music scene.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Interviews on Locally Sourced are really special. It’s like a private concert. My Interview with The Glass Hours comes to mind as one of my favorite shows. Gabrielle Louise was also a stand out interview for me.

Favorite KRFC Memory?
- When we first got started as an independent station, then referred to as Public Radio for the Front Range; we were actually broadcasting out of a small house on the north end of Fort Collins. When describing how to get there (before Google maps) we’d mention there was a huge antenna hooked to the side of it!
Big/Grateful Steve
The Vinyl Frontier and Golden Age of Rock & Roll
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2003
What’s the name of your show?
- I’ve been a music junkie and a rock-and-roller ever since I first heard Bill Haley & The Comets back in 1954 (please… don’t do the math). That moment pretty much rewired my brain and that spark never faded. These days, during The Vinyl Frontier, I kick off the top of each hour with a visit to the Grateful Dead, then explore the wide, wild world of rock through the decades.
- My other show, Golden Age of Rock and Roll, is rooted in my teenage years. I fell in love with the music of that era—the kind you could hear once and instantly sing along to. The writing was simple, memorable, and full of joy. This show is my way of revisiting that timeless sound and sharing the songs that defined a generation.
When can listeners catch your show?
- The Vinyl Frontier is every Friday from 10am-12pm, and Golden Age of Rock & Roll is every Saturday from 10am-12pm.
Who’s behind the mic?
- I’ve been with KRFC since the very first week, and after 49 years in Fort Collins, I can honestly say that—besides meeting Deni—the smartest thing I ever did was leave the East Coast. I’ve always been a full-on music junkie, and unlike a lot of folks my age who stayed rooted in the sounds of the ’50s, I evolved right along with the music.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- All those birthday bashes have been a blast. And when Jen Parker came in, she turned this place around—I didn’t think anyone could top her. But Justin showed up and proved me wrong. He’s been great for the station.

He saw Khrushchev driving through his town in 1960 which had a huge impact on him. Charlie refers to his youth growing up in the 1960s in Iowa as the place where ‘all the food was cooked a long time for our protection’! He came to Colorado for a Grateful Dead concert at Red Rocks. Charlie worked as a social worker for most of his career but was always a music collector and DJing at gigs, music was his salvation. He has been with community radio in Fort Collins for over 30 years, searching for music of substance that tells him the artist’s story and he says he’s ‘just a guy in a studio sharing some groovy sounds’.

The Woodshed
When did you start at KRFC?

What’s the name of your show?
- The Woodshed. Inspired with the help of friends, The Woodshed, is akin to an artist “locking” themselves in a room and practicing a piece of music until deemed ready for the big reveal.

- Tuesdays at 6 pm. Largely my show reflects what I have been listening to, am curious about and what’s happening around our vibrant community.
Who’s behind the mic?
- My show is inspired by the interconnectedness of all people and the music we create. I think, together, these elements shine a bright light on the potential we have as stewards to The Planet. I appreciate many styles of music and identify as a moe.ron through and through.

Who’s behind the mic?
- I find personal inspiration in a lot of 60’s and 70’s rock, soul, and country, and those genres are the building blocks for a lot of modern music. On my show I try to blend the classics with new music, to find similarities and show appreciation for the music we all know and love.

After his tears dried, he decided to redeem his musical aspirations by exploring every genre so he could delve deeply into all the musical mysteries the Universe has to offer. Daddy DeFunk is committed to sharing the musical gems he discovers by refining and distilling them into sonic gold for the pleasure, discovery, and fascination of his listeners.

In addition to being on-air, Dee has produced several segments and has done many KRFC promos through the years.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- A listener from Illinois stopped by the station while visiting his son at CSU. He told us he first discovered KRFC during move-in weekend and has streamed it back home ever since. He stopped in just to say how much he loves the station—so we gave him a quick tour and a KRFC t-shirt to take back to Illinois. A cool reminder of how far our station really reaches.

DJ Monty Pop
Choice City Funk
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2019
What’s the name of your show?
- My show is called Choice City Funk! Sometimes I wish I had a more clever name but at the time I was inspired by the naming conventions of soul & reggae clubs around the world (Mile High Soul Club, Emerald City Soul Club, etc.). I was super into funk 45s at the time but since then the show has branched out to anything vaguely funky and you can hear disco, cumbia, salsa, Afrobeat, reggae, boogie, electro, house, etc. but always some funk.
When can listeners catch your show?
- You can catch my show Saturdays 10pm-midnight!
Who’s behind the mic?
- I am a USPS letter carrier which keeps me very busy but I’ve been collecting records since childhood and DJing vinyl for decades. I play rock’n’roll records at Surfside 7 the second Sunday of every month and I’m usually somewhere in town spinning discs for the first Friday Art Walks. I also love live music and particularly like the hardcore & psych scene here, which conveniently overlaps a lot because it’s such a small city. My secret love is folk music and I have a huge collection of American, Irish, & British folk records. One day I hope to get in the rotation of DJs that do the Sunday morning folk show but as of yet, I’m too scared to ask them to let me in.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- This is a bittersweet memory but the week David Crosby died, Checkpoint Charlie did a tribute show on his Pan-Galactic Poudre Picnic and didn’t take the easy route of just playing Byrds and CSN tunes, he played songs from a myriad of artists that just had that Crosby vibe. It was an amazing afternoon of music. My mom would always tell the story of going to see CSN on their Daylight Again tour when she was 6 months pregnant with me and kept having to go out to the concourse because I was rockin’ too hard in there. I never got to see Croz live but I got to hear him!
DJ Oz
Alternative Echoes
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2023
What’s the name of your show?
- Alternative Echoes, I love the Alternative music genre, whether its 90s grunge, 80s goth or new wave, college rock from back in the day and so on. I wanted a name that gave definition but kept it “loose” in style.
When can listeners catch your show?
- Sunday 4 -6 PM
Who’s behind the mic?
- I love digging through the Alternative music universe from over the past 40 years to find my favorite tunes, B-sides from great artists, bands I missed and bands that inspired the next generation of Alternative music. It’s always a great time and always a little left of center.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Getting involved with local festivals and events to support the station has always been a favorite of mine. Announcing bands on the stage at the Aggie or connecting with the tight knit Blues community at Greeley Blues Jam!
DJ Skinny Rabbits
The Impossible Weight
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2024
What’s the name of your show?
- The Impossible Weight, heavy crates full of heavy hitting head nodding LPs and singles
When can listeners catch your show?
- Every Wednesday night from 10pm-Midnight
Who’s behind the mic?
- I love finding the connections between varied styles of music and stitching them together, from the 10cc sample for the J Dilla beat into the daydreamy Joe Raposo vibes from a Sesame Street classic mixed into a hypnotic Axelrod instrumental or cinematic dub, and then surprise you with a timeless boom bap hip hop or new jack anthem.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Flipping over to KRFC after moving back to CO in 2009 and hearing Ernest Ranglin’s Surfin!
DJ Thruline
NoCo Flow
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2024
What’s the name of your show?
- NoCo Flow
When can listeners catch your show?
- Mondays 3-6pm and Wednesdays 6-8am
Who’s behind the mic?
- My shows evolve organically. I jot down ideas during the prior week for loose guidance (especially for music new to the station) but decisions are usually made on the fly in the studio by what feels right. I try to bring in at least one LP from home in to play a track on vinyl once per hour. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t 🙂
- The music I play is often inspired by core preferences from my early years, what other DJs at KRFC and other choice stations play, recommendations from friends, and more deeply, the concepts of cycles, renewal, and connection.
- My favorite music lately is funk of all sorts, modern soul, and interestingly, “disco-pop”.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- The diversity of programming at KRFC is what originally drew me to the station when I arrived in Northern Colorado almost 20 years ago. I had previously lived in places where local radio was mediocre and other places with stations whose output really enriched my life. I want to support enrichment of lives in the place I call home.
- The original desire to be on air to contribute to local community, support diverse and vibrant music scenes, and find an outlet for personal creative expression was established early on with KRFC. Programming at the station has been a dream of mine for more than a decade that has just recently come true. Woooooot!

Curator's Comment/NoCo Flow
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2025
What’s the name of your show?
- Curator’s Comment or NoCo Flow
When can listeners catch your show?
- Every other Tuesday 8AM-10AM
Who’s behind the mic?
- I grew up surrounded by rhythm — I was in a percussion ensemble and also contributed my efforts in marching, jazz, and symphonic bands. Outside of playing music I performed with a dance company team. While I love just about every genre, indie rock is my go-to no matter the mood. What I love most about community radio is the diversity — voices and stories from all walks of life coming together behind the mic. It’s an honor to share my favorite tracks, musical insights, and passion for sound with our incredible community of listeners. When I’m not hosting the show, you can usually find me outdoors — biking, hiking, or swimming and soaking up every bit of fresh air and sunshine.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Sitting in on Kay’s radio show. She’s AMAZING!
Dr Kranky
Into the Looking Glass
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2024
What’s the name of your show?
- Into the Looking Glass aka Looking Glass aka Look at That Glass aka Look! Dr Kranky’s Glass!
When can listeners catch your show?
- Every other Monday night 10-12. It often does have a late night feel, but not always.
Who’s behind the mic?
- Doctor Kranky Pants is inspired by heady mixtapes; atypical sounds and mashups; long songs; weird songs; pretty, lofi songs; dreamy songs; wild songs; nostalgia; disruption; flow; instrumentals; investigating lineages and scenes; vulnerability; collective effervescence; wide palates; vinyl; “indie” and “alternative” music; local music; guest co-hosts. Dr Kranky loves……. the potential for community radio to uplift a diverse range of music, build connections, and breakdown barriers. Outside the studio, Dr Kranky spends most of his time Scrooge McDucking through seas of vinyl records, eating 7inch singles, plotting, and lining the halls of his mountain top castle with glass that he can look super kranky through.

Rocky Mountain Breakdown
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2024
What’s the name of your show?
- Rocky Mountain Breakdown
When can listeners catch your show?
- The show is every Saturday from 2-4pm, I’m on every 3rd Saturday
Who’s behind the mic?
- I grew up with a banjo-pickin’ daddy in Wyoming, and by the age of 12 was playing bass in a bluegrass band with him at all kinds of hootenannys and hoedowns! In college I continued to meet more people entrenched in the bluegrass music, and found my way to Colorado – a bastion of bluegrass in the West. I joined forces with other bluegrass-loving youth and formed a bluegrass band that hit the road hard and won a bunch of band contests and whatnot. I mellowed out and joined a different band of dear friends and we write our own stuff now.
- Over the years I have met several local and regional heroes who schooled me on the ways of the framers. Flatt and Scruggs, Monroe Bros., Jimmy Martin, Ralph Stanley, Hot Rize, LRB, and so so much more. I love the trad and the rad. Bluegrass is a music of working, suffering, and struggling people. It was born out of innovation, and continues to innovate its sound. On my particular turn at the mic you’re gonna hear some old Doc Watson, and some newer Sierra Hull and stuff in between and even bluegrass-adjacent (I slip in some Old-Time and stuff with drums sometimes! Shhhh!). I often bring in tons of my own collection from home but am happy to take requests if you have them – I’m just tickled that someone’s listening!
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- I’ve been in the KRFC orbit one way or another for over 20 years. Playing Live at Lunch back in the old studio, I’ve been friends with MANY a KRFC DJ through the years, dropping off posters to my next band’s shows and chatting it up with the volunteers, calling in requests to the bluegrass show, and it’s permanently on my car radio dial!

Classic Rock Awakening Show and NoCo Flow
When did you start at KRFC?
- I was welcomed into KRFC in the Fall of 2024.
What’s the name of your show?
- I host the Classic Rock Awakening Show and the NoCo Flow.
When can listeners catch your show?
- Tune in to 88.9 FM or stream on KRFCFM.ORG for two hours of classic rock to help “awaken” your brain and music soul each Saturday beginning at 6:00 A.M. If that’s asking a lot at 6:00 A.M. on a Saturday, just ask your smart speaker to play KRFC. You can do that with coffee in hand or whatever your cup of tea happens to be. I grew up with the music I play on Saturdays when it wasn’t yet considered classic. It was rock in its most creative (IMHO) and formative years. So, I usually lean heaviest on the 70’s and 80’s, dropping into the 90’s a little, too.
- On Thursdays from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M. you’ll catch me on the air for the early afternoon session of the NOCO Flow digging into newly released music, searching out Colorado artists (especially local artists), chatting live with guest artists stopping by the studio or community members with a story to tell. I’ve also been known to drop a classic rock tune here and there on Thursdays while unashamedly plugging my Classic Rock Awakening Show. It’s all about fun and I have a lot of that at KRFC. I hope you do, too, when you listen to KRFC!
Who’s behind the mic?
- Music’s my medicine and KRFC offers a Rx for good living. Whenever I get to talk with listeners about KRFC I notice their smiles. It’s such a pleasure and privilege to be a volunteer DJ at KRFC because I “see” those smiles every time I’m on the air and recognize the joy this station brings to people’s lives. Many folks have called me while I’m on the air to tell me just that. This is what community radio is to me. It’s radio that’s real. As one who frequents the sidewalks of Old Town wearing my KRFC cap, don’t hesitate to stop me and let me know how much you love KRFC, too.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- In 2022 KRFC took a leap into the megawattage stratosphere and was able to pump its power output to 50,000 watts from a scanty few thousand before that. I remember the first time I heard KRFC while living in the foothills near Red Feather Lakes. It was a Saturday morning and this strange sounding fellow named Big Steve was hosting a show called the Golden Age of Rock and Roll. “What is this?” I wondered. The bait was cast. As I discovered even more about KRFC I was hooked. After moving to Fort Collins I walked over to the 2024 KRFC Birthday Bash at O’Dell Brewing Company, met KRFC’s volunteer coordinator, Sean Lamborne, and…more memories continue to be made.

House Rent Party
When did you start at KRFC?
- 2003. I started about one month after first we went on the air.
What’s the name of your show?
- House Rent Party
When can listeners catch your show?
- Two hours of blues music from 8 to 10pm every Wednesday night.
Who’s behind the mic?
- I listen to all kinds of music and enjoy subbing in for the NoCo Flow and many of KRFC’s specialty shows. I especially like championing our amazing local musicians!
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Too many too count. I’ve been privileged to emcee many local concerts and festivals and that’s always fun. I’ve enjoyed training new DJs and it is always gratifying to see them succeed on the air. I enjoy when listeners call in with requests while I’m on the air. I’ve made some good friends this way!
- Here’s one good memory: I didn’t have any broadcasting experience when I came to KRFC, so when I first went on the air I didn’t know if listeners were enjoying my sound. One afternoon I was playing Sam Cooke’s “Touch the Hem of His Garment” and I immediately got a phone call. It was John Magnie. He was building a fence on a hot day and simply called, in his distinctive voice, to thank me for playing that song. That meant a lot to me. I figured if John liked what I was doing I was probably on the right track.

Who’s behind the mic?
- I like to say I fall on the alt-90s side of Americana. Sometimes people say, “Oh, like Shakey Graves!” and I do a little happy dance inside. But I’m also happy to explain; I grew up on both Paul Simon and R.E.M., and fell in love with every artist at Lilith Fair. So, my sets will skew toward harmonies and acoustic textures, and lyrics that I find compelling. But I have to say, access to that new music shelf in the KRFC studio is a great perk of being a DJ!

Who’s behind the mic?
- My show is inspired by the people and stories that shape our community—those everyday moments of connection that remind us why we’re part of something bigger. I’m drawn to music with incredible vocalists, tracks that feel soulful, bold, and honest. From classic R&B and 90s vibes to indie gems and anything that plays with sound or carries real heart—that’s my jam. And don’t be too surprised if a musical number sneaks its way in.
- What I love most about community radio is how it brings us together—real voices, real stories, and a space where everyone can show up exactly as they are. Outside the studio, you’ll usually find me diving into new creative projects, vibing at live shows, or finding ways to uplift the communities I care about.
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- I really enjoyed speaking with Macy Gray — one of my favorite artists growing up. Anytime I get to connect with our community members and learn what grounds them in our larger community, and how they pour into what makes us great, it’s always a rad time!

Who’s behind the mic?
- I’m a photographer by vocation and a drummer by avocation. Raised in a musical household (Mom was a music major as a pianist in college) and started playing drums in 8th grade. Around 1972. Photography took over until recently and I wanted to get back into the music scene. Still playing drums but volunteering for KRFC was a great place to start and now I’m starting my own radio show. So I’m pretty old school musically but welcoming the amazing music we have here. I’m like a kid in a candy store getting to play music by all these very talented musicians plus a dash of my old school stuff. My playlist grows every time I come into the studio and I’m exposed to this depth and breadth of music. And of course, I try to catch anyone playing around town as well!!
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Wow…Helping set up audio and manning a video camera for the Live @ Lunch. Being in the room with that kind of talent is a treat. Like my own personal concert. I have to stop being a fan and concentrate on the task at hand! And then of course having my own show on air…Living the dream! How fun!!! And I will say how wonderful all the folks at KRFC are and very supportive and appreciative!!

- I joined KRFC in 2018, went through the DJ training program, and got my first on-air show in 2019. Currently I’m part of the NoCo Flow daytime crew. Prior to KRFC, I was a jack of many trades. I held many roles over 18 years with Scuba Schools International; was a Century 21 realtor, a Dale Carnegie salesman, and a computer programmer with Humana and StorageTek. When I’m not on the air, I enjoy biking, skiing, backpacking, and traveling with my wife Bettie in our Sprinter Van. Life is good! I’ve always been obsessed with music, so hanging out with all the music geeks at KRFC is my happy place. I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the KRFC family, and to play a small role in this outstanding organization. Rock on!

- I saw Early James at the Armory on a Sunday night, and he was fantastic! After the show, I talked him into an on-air interview on my Monday program! Sister Ray Byers
Sister Ray's Musical Multiverse
When did you start at KRFC?
- Since 2022
What’s the name of your show?
- Sister Ray’s Musical Multiverse – funny enough, I’d originally wanted to name it Sister Ray’s Time Capsule, but Sean noticed that might tread on the toes of similar programs on nearby stations. It was right around the tail end of the MCU (that Doctor Strange movie was still in recent memory) so that was one of three options he floated instead. I latched right onto it. Feels like it fits the vibe of the show much better than my original idea. Multiverse theory is right on – every episode is a different pile of cultural odds and ends from disparate lands and styles and I try to make it so no two are exactly the same. You never quite know what to expect coming into each episode (or going from song to song, if I’m doing it right) except that it’s guaranteed to be interesting.
When can listeners catch your show?
- Right at the very end of the Friday night schedule from 11pm all the way over to 1am for the night owls and insomniacs out there (or, if you have a sensible sleep schedule – couldn’t be me – there’s the convenient show archive on our website and app!)
Who’s behind the mic?
- I’ve been a full-bore musical obsessive from a very young age. A story my family loved to tell growing up went like this: I had a lot of ear infections as a baby, had tubes in my ears, the whole thing. One night, I was bawling my eyes out in pain, nothing could calm me down – until my aunt brought out a little pocket-sized Beatles magazine. I quieted right down and my eyes went wide in wonder. Personally, I think it was the bright, colorful glossy pictures inside and the moving lenticular picture on the cover that did it more than anything, but hey, why let sensibility get in the way of a good story? I was a certified Beatlemaniac from that point forward. Beatles CDs were constantly playing in the house (solo ones, even – Paul & Linda McCartney’s Ram was never too far from the little portable boombox), my childhood stuffed animal was one my aunt made of Paul as he appeared in Yellow Submarine, I went as Paul for Halloween in kindergarten (can you tell who my favorite was?), my sense of humor was lovingly warped by A Hard Day’s Night and Help! as much as the reruns of Monty Python my mother shared with me like other families handed down recipes and folk advice.
- In the third grade, I found an issue of Rolling Stone magazine that purported to list the Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at my piano teacher’s apartment, asked to borrow it and never gave it back. My obsession gained a new, wider scope and a completionist’s zeal for lists that runs within me like a river in the middle of monsoon season to this day. So it goes without saying, after that, I grew up ready and eager to confuse my peers and garner bemused looks of surprised appreciation from their parents. A proud walking anachronism. I got a lot of “did your mom buy that for you?” comments that she had to explain with a patient, “no, that 11-year-old asked for this Mothers of Invention t-shirt himself, just ask and he’ll be more than happy to infodump at you about it.”
- I found The Velvet Underground & Nico at age 10, a fact which sounds both fake and genuinely concerning. From that point on, I wanted nothing more from the world than to be a singer with a voice like Lou Reed. Instead, I ended up as a radio DJ who took his name from a Velvets song the FCC would take a very deep dislike in me playing over the air. Not a bad consolation prize, all things considered, and I’d like to think I still carry its odd anarchic energy onto the airwaves even in its specific absence. They can’t complain about me playing “The Gift”, though, so I’ve done that twice so far. You never know when it might happen again! Listen closely, and if you collect three Gift Sightings, you get a special decoder ring in the mail!
Favorite KRFC Memory?
- I’d been wanting to go to the monthly Happy Hour gatherings since I started broadcasting here. It’s a nice excuse to get out of the house, meet wonderful like-minded people, see interesting local acts, expand my horizons a little further past my front window and the windshield of my car, that kind of thing. However, I’ve got social anxiety strong enough to kill a team of draft horses, so it took me about a year and a half to work up the courage. I’d been invited to an awards banquet in what I’d figured was a lovely show of appreciation to the on-air crew, so I figured now’s the time, I’ll return that kindness by finally showing my face in public.
- I wandered into the Magic Rat midway through a set by Garden District and did what I do best at social gatherings – stand around awkwardly with a drink in my hand until someone comes up to me and says “Hey, how’s it going?” I test the waters, introduce myself, shake hands, say “yeah, I’m Sister Ray, I have a show at the end of Friday night.” The first response I get is, “Oh, that’s you! How does it feel to be nominated for an award?” I blink a couple times and eventually manage to squeak out, “……….I’m what now?”
- And that’s how I learned I was up for Best Evening Show at the CBAs. Ended up placing second. I’ve got the certificate framed up on my bedroom wall and I haven’t missed a Happy Hour since. You never know.

Favorite KRFC Memory?
- Playing a track from The Flaming Lips album Zaireeka, which famously requires 4 separate inputs simultaneously playing music to play a complete song. It kind of worked! Although I pegged the levels since the combined noise from 4 input channels overloaded the volume until I turned down the levels a bit! What other station gives you the freedom to try something like that?
