About KRFC

The mission of KRFC 88.9 FM is to support Colorado’s musicians and music industry and to provide positive local community programming that connects, informs, and inspires listeners.

“KRFC doesn’t just talk about supporting the local music scene, they go above and beyond to share local music, and provide a platform for local artists to grow, evolve, and network.”

Andy Sydow, Musician

History

KRFC 88.9 FM was established by a group of former DJs from KCSU-FM at Colorado State University (CSU). In 1995, these non-student DJs were required to leave KCSU-FM when CSU decided to make the station solely student-run. In response, the group founded Public Radio for the Front Range (PRFR) in September 1995, receiving IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status shortly thereafter.

By the summer of 1996, PRFR applied for a construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to build a station on the 88.9 MHz frequency. However, they faced challenges from other broadcasting groups. In 2000, PRFR applied for the 89.7 MHz frequency in a low-power jurisdiction, but another group applied for the same frequency. After successful negotiations, PRFR agreed to accept the 88.9 MHz frequency. The FCC granted PRFR a construction permit for a 3,000-watt non-commercial radio station on July 7, 2002.

On March 1, 2003, KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins began broadcasting, marking the station’s official debut.

In 2016, KRFC moved into its new home within The Music District campus, marking a significant milestone in the station’s history. This relocation expanded KRFC’s studio facilities to include four state-of-the-art studios equipped for live broadcasts, alongside welcoming office spaces designed to foster a music-centric atmosphere. Becoming part of The Music District allowed KRFC to join a vibrant ecosystem of music and arts-focused professionals, creating valuable opportunities for collaboration and community engagement. The new space not only enhanced KRFC’s technical capabilities but also strengthened its role as a cultural hub in Fort Collins, enabling the station to connect more deeply with listeners and local artists.

Over its 18-year legacy of broadcasting in Northern Colorado, KRFC has evolved into an important cultural institution, impacting both the music industry and the quality of community life. The station’s programming is created and delivered by locals, serving as a trusted resource for community news and programming.

In 2022, KRFC undertook a significant upgrade by increasing its broadcast power to 50,000 watts and constructing its own antenna tower. This expansion more than doubled the station’s broadcast footprint, allowing it to reach new communities as far south as North Denver and further east of Greeley, Colorado. The nearly $400,000 cost of erecting the new tower and increasing the signal power was financed through public and private donations.

In 2025, KRFC celebrated its 22nd anniversary with a family-friendly birthday bash, highlighting its role as a platform for local artists, businesses, and voices that make the region unique. This milestone was a testament to the strength of the Northern Colorado community and the station’s commitment to connecting and inspiring through music and meaningful programming.

KRFC’s programming includes a diverse range of music genres, local news, and community-focused content. The station is powered by over 190 volunteers who contribute their time and talent to deliver distinctive radio programming.

Powered by Volunteers

Every broadcast starts long before the mic goes live. Our DJs spend hours shaping their sets — crafting intentional themes and building shows full of personality.

And they don’t just show up in the studio; they show up for our community.

They lift up local musicians, nonprofits, and storytellers through interviews and on-air features, then turn around to MC a community event or clap along in the audience for a band they spun that morning.

Altogether, they give more than 10,000 hours each year to keep KRFC rooted in people, purpose, and heart.

We are endlessly grateful for our volunteers. They are the heart of KRFC and remind us every day why community radio matters.
